ACT III STORY FACTORY: MADEFIRE

CREATIVE DIRECTOR & HEAD OF STUDIO AND INNOVATION

Give a character one storyline that threads across mediums, and the canon outgrows any single frame. Develop the story, the world, and the technology as one, and the adventure will take an audience with it.Madefire was built for exactly that: a story factory where original worlds could be developed alongside the tools to tell them.

The mission ran in both directions: give artists, writers, and indie studios the means to tell their own stories, and expand the worlds the majors already owned. Marvel’s Black Panther and Black Widow carried into new dimensions; Planet of the Apes built out for Fox.

With open authoring tools, anyone could make a Motion Book and publish it to the marketplace, sitting beside the heroes that inspired them. Artist or super.

“You can arrange the artwork on layers which gives you depth, parallax, camera movement, mood music, sound effects — and turn something flat into something which exists in space before you.”

— Dave Gibbons, co-creator of Watchmen

Madefire Originals
Our originals were expansive worlds, built to live across formats. You could read them, watch them, or stand inside them, each form tuned to what the story needed.

When Magic Leap arrived, Motion Books became spatial: stories unfolding in the room around you. Artists could master out their own work and publish straight to the headset, no code required. The tools that let them tell a story could now let them place an audience inside it.

Batman: Arkham Origins was developed with Madefire Studios, DC, and Warner Bros. A prequel series to the groundbreaking Batman: Arkham video games, it is an interactive branching narrative that extended into the game itself.

Mono was the marquee Madefire original: a legendary ape-man and former assassin to the Queen who returns from exile to discover he has a daughter. She has been taken by the Fold, a shadowy syndicate from his past.

Real-time shaders translated the original drawn marks at full scale, so the world standing around you was still hand-drawn. You could read Mono’s story, then watch it unfold. Now you move through it as Mono, into the Fold’s Arctic lair. The cinematic adventure progresses as you participate.
